Miranda Kerr Profile

Posted on 22 August 2008 by R. van der Weele

Miranda May Kerr (born 20 April 1983) is an Australian model, best known as one of the Victoria’s Secret Angels. She was the first Australian addition to the Victoria’s Secret campaign, and was the face of Australian fashion chain Portmans and now David Jones Limited. Kerr rose to prominence within the fashion industry in her mid-teens after winning a 1997 Australian nation-wide model search hosted by Dolly Magazine and Impulse fragrances. Kerr’s career has continued to expand, and as of 2008, she has achieved international fame.

Early life and family

Kerr was born in Sydney but raised in Gunnedah, New South Wales, a small rural town. Her parents are Therese and John Kerr, and she has a younger brother named Matthew. During her childhood, Kerr stated she “raced motorbikes and rode horses on [her] grandmother’s farm” and describes her early life in the Australian countryside as “very grounding … there wasn’t any pretentiousness and no one really cared what you were wearing. You could just be you.” She enjoyed climbing trees, and it allows her to keep “grounded”

Her family moved to Brisbane to allow Kerr and her brother to experience city life. She graduated from All Hallows’ School and planned to study nutrition before pursuing modeling.

Career

Early career

At age thirteen, Kerr entered and won the 1997 annual Dolly Magazine/Impulse Model Competition. She was flown to Sydney a week before her fourteenth birthday to shoot for the magazine. Upon Kerr’s win, local media expressed “concerned outrage” at her young age. The controversy raised concerns about the glorification of young girls within the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. Some conservative media outlets claimed her Dolly shoot (including images of fourteen year old Kerr in bathing suits) constituted a form of child pornography. Of the press, Kerr said: “In the media at the time they were trying to cling on to anything remotely to do with paedophilia. Dolly is a magazine for teenage girls, not for old men. And I was fully clothed! Doing a winter shoot! They just made something out of nothing.”

Kerr suffered emotional distress following the death of her high-school boyfriend during her final year of schooling. Eventually overcoming the trauma, Kerr signed to Chadwick Models Melbourne Division after graduating high school. This was followed by Chic Management Sydney Division, and she found modelling success in both her native Australia and in Japan. She received considerable commercial exposure after a series of beach-ware predominantly for Australian surf chain Billabong, in which Kerr modelled for surf brands Tigerlily, Roxy, Billabong Girls and One Teaspoon. This increased her profile in the Australian and Asian markets, after which Kerr relocated to New York.

Established career

Once in New York, Kerr had a multitude of runway appearances, and then signed with Next model agency in early 2004. From there, she was immediately booked for runway and print campaigns for dozens of major labels, including Baby Phat, Lisa Ho, Voodoo Dolls, Levi’s, Bettina Liano, Nicola Finetti, L.A.M.B, Heatherette, Betsey Johnson, Trelise Cooper, Jets, John Richmond, Blumarine Swimwear, Neiman Marcus, Seafolly Swimwear, Anna Molinari, Rock and Republic and Roberto Cavalli.

She appeared frequently in the televised Victoria’s Secret runway parades, was booked for print in magazines such as Elle, Australian Vogue and Harpers Bazaar and was featured in television advertisements for brands such as Portmans, Bonds and Veet.

In 2006, Kerr broke into the United States market when she signed a lucrative cosmetics contract with Maybelline New York. The campaign ran in a series of internationally sold women’s beauty magazines, including Cosmopolitan, CLEO and ELLE, and was eventually featured in Victoria’s Secret catalogues.

Following her success with Maybelline, Kerr became the first Australian model to be offered a contract with Victoria’s Secret and upon her acceptance, the first ever Australian Victoria’s Secret Angel. She became a featured model on the company’s internationally-accessed website, joining the stable of prestige models already signed to the lingerie giant including Gisele Bündchen, Alessandra Ambrosio, Karolína Kurková, Adriana Lima, Selita Ebanks, and Heidi Klum. Kerr’s increasing popularity as one of the globally recognized Angels led for Kerr to be featured in the Victoria’s Secret 2006 and 2007 televised runway shows, which aired on four continents.

As of 2007, Kerr has signed as the face of Californian fashion retailer Arden B. After debuting in their Spring and Summer ad campaigns, Kerr returned for their Fall 2007 campaign, shot by fashion photographer Diego Uchitel. She has also become the new face of Clinique Happy, and signed a lucrative six-figure deal to be the new face of Australian department store David Jones, replacing model Megan Gale. In 2008, earning at an estimated total of $3.5 million in the past 12 months, Forbes placed Kerr tenth in the list of the world’s top-earning models.

Filmography

Kerr (along with several other Victoria’s Secret and Next agency models) was featured in a music video for American hip-hop stars Kanye West and Pharrell Williams’ single Number One. Kerr was also featured in a 2006 music video for then boyfriend Jay G Lyon’s band Tamarama’s independently released single Everything To Me.

Following her modeling success with Victoria’s Secret, Kerr made a small guest appearance in the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother alongside fellow Angels Adriana Lima, Marisa Miller, Heidi Klum and Selita Ebanks.

Other

As reported in 2007, Kerr is writing an inspirational self-esteem self-help book called Treasure Yourself aimed at the female teenage demographic. Kerr says, “Basically, it’s a whole lot of information that I’ve found, that has helped me. If I can help one girl by doing this then I’ve completed my purpose.”

Public image

Reception

Kerr is dubbed “the next MacPherson” and generates a high volume of interest in both the Australasian, European and American markets. Kerr’s model trademark is her dimples. Celebrity photographer Russell James said of Kerr, “The US has fallen in love with her. We love her because she has the most incredible girl-next-door look and she’s also insanely beautiful. It means women are not intimidated by her looks and guys think they might be able to talk to her. It’s a fantastic combination … people want to be around her; she’s fun on a shoot … and she’s not stupid, which can be a very annoying trait among some models.” Model agent Ursula Hufnagl described Kerr as “the perfect endorsement”, citing her ability to “truly sell a product.”

Kerr’s charitable work includes Wildlife Warriors Worldwide and Children International.

Personal life

In 2003, Kerr began dating finance broker Adrian Camilleri. Following an Australian Securities and Investments Commission investigation, Camilleri was found guilty on five counts of fraudulent behaviour spanning between February 2003 to February 2004. Kerr subsequently dissolved the relationship. 2007 reports claim Kerr suffered financially “after taking her boyfriend’s financial advice” but chose not to take legal action.

Kerr practices Nichiren Buddhism — a Japanese branch of the Buddhist religion — and believes “we have a responsibility to bring peace and harmony to our lives and the world.” As part of her Nichiren beliefs, Kerr reportedly chants every morning and night for 20 minutes, practices yoga, meditates and reads widely on spirituality. In early 2008, Kerr began dating actor and Buddhist Orlando Bloom.

According to a Victoria’s Secret profile on Kerr, posted on the CBS YouTube page, Kerr’s described her take on life as “enjoying wherever it is [I am] and trying to be in the moment as much as possible.

Miranda Kerr on the 3rd August, 2008, shared on Australian chat show Rove Live that one of her secrets was that her belly button was able to be both an “innie” and an “outie” before going on to revealing on live national television.

Karolina Kurkova Profile

Karolína Isela Kurkova (born February 28, 1984) is a Czech model, best known as one of the Victoria’s Secret Angels. Mario Testino said of Kurková, “The proportions of her body and her face, as well as her energy level, make her a model who could fit almost into any moment.” Designer Marc Jacobs said, “She has an angelic look with a dark side, she’s sweet and fun but looks like she could be an evil bewitching child.” Vogue editor Anna Wintour called her the “next supermodel”.
Early life and career

Karolína Kurková was born in D??ín, Czechoslovakia, to Josef Kurka, a Czech basketball player, and a Slovak mother.

After a friend sent photos of Kurková to an agency in Prague, she immediately landed a runway appearance, as well as a commercial and print ad. She was 15 at the time. She later traveled to Milan to gain more experience. There, Miuccia Prada, the designer behind the brand Prada, signed her to a modeling contract.Daughter of a Czech basketball star, Karolina Kurkova inherited her father’s figure and height. After a best friend encouraged her to send her pictures to an agency in Prague, Karolina found herself walking on catwalks as well as appearing in commercials and print ads.

Kurková subsequently flew to Milan, where she was signed by well-known Italian fashion designer Miuccia Prada. In September 1999, the hard-working 15-year-old model landed a modeling job with fashion and lifestyle magazine Vogue, in New York.

Moving to the Big Apple, Kurková, at the tender age of 17, received America’s recognition when she graced the cover of the February 2001 edition of Vogue, becoming one of the youngest models ever to appear on the magazine’s cover.

Modeling career

Following her Vogue cover, Kurková became recognized at haute couture fashion shows, and lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret chose her to be a part of that year’s televised fashion show special. Prominent fashion houses such as Yves Saint Laurent signed Kurková to modeling contracts, while print campaigns for Tommy Hilfiger, Valentino, and others helped expose her even more. In the 2002 Victoria’s Secret fashion show she modeled the multi-million dollar bra worth almost $10 million, embellished with rubies and emeralds, which was designed by Hearts on Fire. Dubbed “the next supermodel” by Vogue editor Anna Wintour[citation needed], Kurková was named “Model of the Year” at the 2002 VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards. Kurková later signed contracts with designers including Ralph Lauren, Óscar de la Renta, Chanel and Balenciaga.

Most recently, she has appeared on the cover of Korea’s W, as well as the Greek Vogue. She also appeared as the new face for DELL. Kurková has been featured in fashion spreads in most major fashion magazines including U.K., U.S., and German, French Vogue (as well as other international versions of), Vanity Fair and Vanity Fair Germany The Face. In Germany she covered the GQ SUMMER STYLE GQ Sommer Stil and the Park Avneue besides that she was part of many articles in fashion magzines like max or GALA. She has worked with well-known fashion photographers including Steven Klein, Mario Sorrenti, and Mario Testino.

She was again featured in the 2006 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, showcasing the multi-million dollar bra worth, this one worth $6.5 million, decked with almost 2000 diamonds weighing 800 carats, and a centerpiece diamond brooch weighing 10 carats. She happens to be the only other Victoria’s secret angel besides Heidi Klum to model the multi-million dollar bra twice in 2002 and 2006. Karolina has done several print and ad campaigns for lingerie giant Victoria’s Secret.

Kurková is among the world’s top-earning models.

In December 2007, she could be seen in print ads for Dell and was featured on the February 2008 cover of Esquire magazine, re-creating the classic 1966 Angie Dickinson cover on Esquire’s 75th anniversary along with fellow Victoria’s Secret Angels Adriana Lima, Izabel Goulart and Selita Ebanks. Model.com featured her at No.5 on the list of the hottest models today. She graced the cover of Elle magazine’s February 2008 issue and appeared only in shoes, diamonds and gloves for the November 2007 issue of Vanity Fair celebrating 20 years of supermodels with her fellow Angels. Karolina is widely considered one of the sexiest women in the world, and was chosen to be a part of People magazine’s 100 most beautiful people in the world, sharing that space with her fellow ‘Angels’, with whom she also received a star on the Hollywood “Walk of Fame” prior to the 2007 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

In the last Cía Marítima fashion show, Kurková’s unexpectedly heavier physique brought criticism from the Brazilian press as having “too much back fat, love handles and cellulite”

Television/Movie Career

Kurková has appeared on “Showbiz Tonight”, “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, and Miss Junior 2005.

Kurková is also set to make her film debut alongside Frankie Muniz, Harvey Keitel and Amber Valletta in Howard Himelstein’s coming-of-age dramedy, My Sexiest Year.

She has been cast as Courtney A. Kreiger / Cover Girl in the live action G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra to be released in 2009.

Personal life

She currently lives in New York City’s TriBeCa district and enjoys courtside basketball games at Madison Square Garden.

Kurková has been quoted as saying, “Everyone likes and deserves to have some fun. In the end, when you smile, life smiles back at you!”

Charity

In March 2006, Kurková received an award from the non-profit organization, Women Together, for her humanitarian work. Kurková was honored for working for the welfare of children through organizations such as “The Beautiful Life Fund”, “Free Arts” and “Global Youth Action Network”.
